Whether it’s morning, afternoon or evening, there seems to be an abundance of activities buzzing around Victoria that pique the interest and satisfy cravings for fun, summer living for all of those who visit. We’ve had an amazing streak of weather, having enjoyed loads of sun and warm sea breezes that send you running for the beach or to one of our many nearby lakes. Hot days are followed with warm nights that allow for many outdoor activities for residents and visitors that really stretch the day out. With the weather showing no sign of cooling down, let’s have a look at what’s to come for the second half of summer.
Known for its year-round beauty, The Butchart Gardens is home to The 5 Seasons of splendor; spring, summer, autumn, Christmas and winter. While each of their five seasons offer something a little different to keep visitors interested year-round, if you can only make the trip once, summer is the time to go! From June 30 until September 1, every Saturday, The Butchart Gardens holds a fireworks display. The amazing show is included in the regular admission price and guests can walk the gardens and set up their own blanket, as well as choose from a gourmet picnic menu to allow for drinks and bites throughout the display. If this doesn’t strike a chord with you, see the many musical acts they provide for August here. If you would like more information on how to plan your trip to see The Butchart Gardens fireworks display, or any other of their summer events, have a look on our website.
While most outdoor activities must remain outdoors, some indoor activities can break free and expose themselves to the warm fresh air of summer. Friends and families can grab a blanket, a few lawn chairs, some snacks and setup for a night outside at the movies–free-of-charge. There are ten outdoor movies scheduled for August in three different locations–the Mayfair Shopping Centre parking lot, Topaz Park and Beacon Hill Park. Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, The Princess Bride, Top Gun, Jaws and The Goonies will all air at the Mayfair Shopping Centre and Topaz park locations. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Harry in Your Pocket, Beetlejuice and WarGames will be airing in Beacon Hill Park at the Cameron Bandshell stage as part of the Free-B Film Festival! You can find dates, times and details on each location here.
The open air music scene in Victoria continues with the Rifflandia Music Festival. On September 13 to 16, 2012, Rifflandia Music Festival will reach a milestone of five amazing years bringing local, Canadian and international talent to Victoria. Transforming the city into one big musical buffet, this year’s celebration is bigger and better, with artists including legendary The Flaming Lips, the all-Canadian rock band Sloan, as well as Dan Mangan, Band of Skulls and Mother Mother. Fans can look forward to the return of the Market Square venue, as well as Royal Athletic Park with ten local food vendors this year and artists performing on ten different stages. Also returning this year is ArtLandia, the War Child Lounge, Wristband Connect and the ever-delightful RifflandiaTV, hosted by Chris Vickers.
